A beloved, decades-old locksmith business comes to Brooklyn. The Upper East Side’s most trusted locksmith, Menashe Sofer, recently closed the doors to Night & Day Locksmith — but his son is opening them back up. That’s right: Lockbuster’s own Jay Sofer, NYC’s most highly rated locksmith on Yelp, recently acquired his father’s 45-year-old locksmith shop to continue the tradition of serving the city. Menashe Sofer immigrated to the United States in 1974. He spoke very little English, and started his life in America as a bellboy. After a few years, he found work as a locksmith — a profession he quickly fell in love with. He labored night and day, sent money home to his family, established long-term friendships with clients, and finally scraped together enough savings to buy Night & Day. That same year, Jay was born. “It’s a real rags to riches American Dream story,” says Jay. “It was hard for my dad to pass on the business, and I think I’m the only one who really could have taken it over with integrity.” Menashe’s neighborhood store was known for its uniquely old-school, personal touch. “Mena”, as his clients affectionately referred to him, knew everyone in the Upper East Side neighborhood by name, and he even collected polaroids of his clients’ pets to hang on the walls of Night & Day. It was, first and foremost, a family store. It’s fitting, then, that when Mena was priced out of the neighborhood, his son stepped in. Jay is bringing Night & Day back to life — this time, in Brooklyn. “It’s going to take a full year off my life, but I couldn’t have it any other way,” he jokes. Night & Day’s new office is located in Bushwick, serving Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, and the greater Brooklyn community.
